Why is it the more you want something the harder it is to start it? How do you take the first step to just begin, stop procrastinating and making up reasons (aka excuses) to push it for tomorrow?
This desire to initiate an action could be for any meaningful goal: weight loss, making a job change, starting a business, ending a toxic relationship, etc.
We all want the end result but we just can’t start.
What’s shocking is many of us don’t even feel that we are worthy of the goal. It either seems unreachable and unrealistic or worse….we assume that we don’t measure up to even ask for the goal itself.
So how do you overcome this?
The first step is acceptance and knowing you are worthy.
Remember, the more fear you have just shows how badly you really want it. Hug that fear and say thank you because it just showed you how much value this end goal means to you. Without the fear it would have been just another ordinary goal.
Now that you know its value, not achieving your goal will only make it more painful.
Why would you want that?
If anything, it should give you more of a reason to start. After all who wants to live a life in pain and regret?
So now we are back to our initial question. How do you start?
Start with your fearless action.
This is not about coming up with a detailed plan, doing something completely out of the norm, getting an accountability partner or doing something that scares you shitless. It’s not about daring to do the impossible but quite the opposite.
It’s an action item that doesn’t feel exhaustive, doesn’t require any planning and is fairly easy to do without much motivation; yet it takes you in the direction of your end goal. It’s almost fun to work on.J
Let’s call it your microbaby step.
This step is never fear based. It should be simple, easy to do and maybe even a little fun.
Such as..
Losing weight: Wearing your workout clothes around the house but not doing any workout in it.
Finding a job: Changing one bullet point on your resume.
Don’t plan to do more than just that one “fearless” task on your very first day. The next day repeat this same task (if it can be repeated) and add your next fearless task.
Losing weight: Creating a playlist that you might want to listen to while on the elliptical.
Finding a job: Picking out an outfit that you will wear to your job interview.
Do this for about a week or two until it starts to feel normal. In a few days you might even look forward to doing it and here is the best part:
You have officially started working on your goal!
